RICHMOND, VA - Friday afternoon's failure to make the starting field at Richmond International Raceway drove the Faith Motorsports Nationwide Series program to never-before-seen levels.
After missing his fifth straight race, Morgan Shepherd was forced to lay off his final track crew member and will rely on family to help field the car at Dover in two weeks.
"I've got one guy in the shop helping me get the car ready and when we get to Dover it will be myself, my wife, my daughter and my secretary," Shepherd said. "That's all we've got left."
While Shepherd's low-budget operation had never rivaled the staff numbers of his competitors, the team's lack of performance since early summer has resulted in cut after cut.
"There isn't anything else left to cut," Shepherd said. "We were fortunate that we had a handful of guys who have helped us in year's past volunteer to help us at Richmond. Hopefully, some of them will be able to help us again at Dover."
Shepherd said while his team has watched the last five races from the sideline, he still believes a sponsor could reap great benefits by helping him get his program back on track.
"We can run a race team on less than anyone in the garage. I guarantee that," he said. "I wish someone would see the potential in our ministry and our racing and come on board to help us."
Shepherd said the primary reason the team has fallen on tough times at track in recent months is technology.
"We have to look around and see what other teams are doing and try to keep up," he said. "We don't have the computers and the engineers to help develop speed for us. We have to wait until someone else develops it and then try to keep up the best we can. We are two steps behind every time we unload at the track."
