FORT WORTH, TX - Call what you want, but finishing in 28th place on a 180-mph speedway while driving a road course car is one major accomplishment!
Morgan Shepherd did just that Saturday afternoon, coming home 28th in the O’Reilly 300 at Texas Motor Speedway while driving the team’s road course car due to tearing up his primary piece last weekend at Bristol.
“We got caught at a bad time and it hurt,” Shepherd said, referring to his having to use the team’s road course car at Texas. The team’s primary car was crashed badly at Bristol requiring major repair work. The road course car had been carried on the trailer the past three weeks as a backup while the team’s real backup car was being switched over from a Dodge to a Chevrolet.
“The decision to go to Chevy didn’t come until after the first of the year so we had to get the Daytona car ready first and then we got the primary car changed over,” Shepherd said. “The backup car isn’t quite ready yet and we were hoping to get through Nashville without tearing anything up, but we weren’t so lucky.”
Shepherd said running the road course car on the 1.5-mile super speedway at Texas was a scary venture, but one he had to attempt in order to maintain his position in the Top 30 owner’s points.
“We were about to wreck just about every lap,” he said. “It wasn’t a fun race, but we got through it and we hope to get everything back in order next weekend for Nashville.”
Shepherd had to start 39th on a provisional at Texas, the second week in a row that the Top 30 owner’s points position has paid off.
“Last year this time we would have been sent home so we are very thankful to have those points there when we need them,” he said.
